NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Stocks churned Tuesday, with investors struggling as the Dow and S&P 500 flirted with fresh 12-year lows on worries about the financial markets and the economy.The Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) drifted higher over three hours into the session. The Dow fell to 6,705.63 earlier, the lowest point during a session since April 22, 1997.
The S&P 500 (SPX) index inched lower. Earlier, it fell to 692.30, the lowest point during a session since Oct. 3, 1996.
The Nasdaq composite (COMP) added 4 points, or 0.3%. The tech-fueled average has held up better than the other major averages this year and remains above its close of 1,316.12 from last Nov. 20.
