TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida's revenue outlook is so bleak that lawmakers should meet in special session next month or in early January to prevent an unconstitutional budget deficit, Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink said Wednesday.House Speaker Ray Sansom said he still thinks Gov. Charlie Crist and a select legislative panel may be able to handle the situation without a special session, but he did not exclude that possibility.
Sink, the only Democrat on the Florida Cabinet, said the state already has borrowed $300 million from its own trust funds to pay day-to-day expenses due to a growing shortfall in general revenue, mostly sales tax. She expects to borrow at least $500 million more from the trust funds.
"You can't look at these numbers and not be alarmed," Sink said.
