SACRAMENTO (AP) -- California's jobless rate held steady at 7.7 percent in September, remaining for a second month at its highest level since March 1996, according to the latest state figures released Friday. The state's unemployment rate, compiled by the California Employment Development Department, is higher than the national rate, which also was unchanged at 6.1 percent in September.

"It's kind of wait and see," Callori said. "We're kind of tracking pretty close to the national trend. They were stable as well."
