SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- The California Senate on Friday failed to pass a spending plan that was nearly identical to one presented last week by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, pushing the state closer to a modern-day record for a budget impasse.The budget bill failed on a 24-15 vote, generating no support from Republicans. Two GOP votes are required to reach the two-thirds majority needed for approval.
The leadership will bring it back for another vote later in the day, but that also is not expected to succeed.
Among other issues, Democrats and Republicans disagree over whether to raise the state's sales tax temporarily, which the Republican governor has proposed.
